A 24-year-old Florida motorist is facing a string of criminal offenses after allegedly crashing an SUV into a parked vehicle in Daytona Beach and attempting to talk her way out of custody during an unusual roadside confrontation captured on police body cameras. The suspect, identified as Elizabeth Boucher, downplayed the severe impact before repeatedly appealing to officers on a personal level throughout the late August investigation.
Newly released surveillance footage from the neighborhood documents the intensity of the collision, showing the SUV colliding with a parked Honda sedan. The force of the crash was substantial enough to shove the stationary passenger car completely across a front lawn and out of the security camera’s frame, leaving visible wreckage in its wake.
Despite the obvious structural devastation left behind, Boucher offered responding law enforcement officers an understated version of the wreck when questioned at the scene. Video recordings reveal her telling officers that she believed she had merely clipped the front headlight of another vehicle, claiming she was unsure of what had actually transpired.
An officer swiftly corrected her minimization of the event, pointing out that the collision went far beyond a minor scrape to a headlight. The responding officer noted that the impact had forcefully dislodged the vehicle from its original position, highlighting the sharp contrast between physical evidence and the driver's explanation.
The interaction took another odd turn when the officer requested standard identification to begin processing the crash report. Rather than providing a valid driver's license, Boucher handed the officer a passport. The officer immediately informed her that she had presented a passport and reiterated the formal instruction to provide a driver's license.
Throughout the roadside interview, Boucher repeatedly tried to appeal to the responding personnel by framing the encounter as a misunderstanding among acquaintances. At one point during the August 30 encounter, she stated to the Daytona Beach police officers that she believed they were all friends, seeking to soften the trajectory of the investigation.
Boucher also pleaded directly with law enforcement not to take her into custody, attempting to shift the focus toward an electronic smoking device. She insisted to officers that the situation merely involved a vape that was not even operational, begging them not to incarcerate her over the item as the investigation deepened.
Recognizing observable signs of impairment and the magnitude of the property damage, officers formally informed Boucher that the nature of the stop was transitioning from a routine civil collision evaluation into a full criminal driving under the influence inquiry. Law enforcement subsequently administered her standard Miranda warnings at the scene.
As officers conducted their assessment, they also directed Boucher to lean against a patrol vehicle to ensure she maintained her balance and did not fall over. The instruction underscored law enforcement's ongoing concerns regarding her physical stability during the field encounter.
When asked to participate in standardized roadside field sobriety exercises to assess her physical and cognitive condition, Boucher declined to perform them. Her refusal effectively concluded the roadside testing phase of the traffic stop, prompting officers to move forward with custodial procedures.
Following the refusal of physical exercises, an officer formally requested that Boucher submit to a breath test to measure her blood alcohol concentration. Video records confirm that she again exercised a refusal, declining the chemical testing process offered by the investigating officers.
While facing imminent arrest, Boucher addressed the officers regarding her family responsibilities, maintaining that she was not resisting their authority and simply wanted to ensure her young daughter was properly cared for. Shortly thereafter, she asked the officers directly if she was being transported to jail.
Following the roadside investigation, Boucher was formally taken into custody and booked on an array of criminal charges. The allegations against her include driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, DUI accompanied by damage to property or another person, battery, resisting an officer without violence, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.
Court records indicate that Boucher has since entered a plea of not guilty to all charges lodged against her in connection with the incident. As the case progresses through the local judicial system, the recorded body camera and surveillance footage will serve as central pieces of evidence in evaluating the driving and drug-related allegations.
