A heart-wrenching tale of a family's search for answers unfolds as they grapple with the possibility that a missing American dad, Jitendra Patel, may have been caught in a catastrophic flood in Nepal. The devastating event has already taken a heavy toll, with hundreds dead and thousands unaccounted for.
Sunny Patel, Jitendra's son, stumbled upon a viral video depicting the flood's fury on the border between Nepal and China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The video, which has since gained widespread attention, was a haunting reminder of the disaster's impact. It was then that Sunny's worst fears were realized.
"I watched the video and I just thought of how horrific it was. And then... probably 30 seconds later, it registered," Sunny recalled. The chilling realization led him to text his mother, who confirmed his suspicions: "That's exactly where he was," she replied.
Jitendra, who was on a spiritual pilgrimage, had last been heard from on the morning of the flood. Sunny believes his father had already crossed into China, though he has been unable to confirm the details. The lack of information from China has been particularly frustrating for the family.
"We have spoken to embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing, as well as the U.S. State Department," Sunny said. They have filed missing person reports with "every agency we can think of, and some have been responsive." The family is also trying to raise awareness about the situation through media segments, hoping to bring attention to the plight of those affected on the Chinese side.
Experts believe the mudslides and flash flooding were caused by a large chunk of ice breaking off a glacier and falling into the Lhende Khola River. The resulting waves of rock, ice, and debris hurled through the mountain river systems, creating a deadly torrent.
Newly released figures indicate more than 600 people have been killed, with over 3,000 still missing and more than 4,000 rescued. The flood's aftermath is a stark reminder of the fragility of the natural world and the devastating consequences of climate change.
Jitendra was part of a group heading up to Mount Kailash, a sacred site for many, where thousands embark on spiritual pilgrimages each year. Sunny described his father as a man who "believed in the goodness of everybody, probably to a fault," and "lived with kindness in his heart." His upbeat and positive demeanor was a beacon to those who knew him.
"He always, always, always said, 'God is good...' If you called him and said, 'How you doing?' He would say, 'I'm the best, God is great.' And he was just the most upbeat, positive person I've ever met," Sunny said. The family's hope is that, if Jitendra is among the missing, he was found in a peaceful place, surrounded by the beauty of nature that he so cherished.
As the search continues, the Patel family remains hopeful that answers will soon be found. They are also reminded of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of such tragedy. The outpouring of support from friends, family, and the public has been a source of comfort during this difficult time.
