Helen Jenner Poised to Become Reform UK Welsh Leader Following Dan Thomas Resignation

Helen Jenner has emerged as the leading contender to assume the permanent leadership of Reform UK's political group in Wales, following the abrupt departure of Dan Thomas from the helm. Senior figures within the party have reportedly thrown their weight behind Jenner, solidifying her position as the clear favourite to secure the role on a long-term basis.

Jenner, who currently serves as a Member of the Senedd representing the Bangor Conwy Môn constituency, was previously the deputy leader under Thomas and stepped up to take charge on an interim basis immediately after the leadership vacancy arose. Insiders have confirmed that influential figures within the wider party organisation are supportive of her taking over the reins formally.

The sudden vacancy at the top of Reform's Welsh operation follows the resignation of Dan Thomas over the weekend. Thomas chose to stand down from his leadership post after being taken into custody and subsequently released on police bail in connection with an investigation involving allegations of assault as well as controlling and coercive behaviour.

In the wake of his arrest, Thomas has maintained his complete innocence, asserting publicly that he has done nothing wrong. Despite stepping back from his responsibilities as the head of the Welsh group, he has not been suspended by Reform and continues to sit in the Senedd as the Member representing Casnewydd Islwyn.

Thomas had been serving in the leadership role since February, having originally been appointed to guide the party's Welsh parliamentary presence by Reform UK's national leader, Nigel Farage. His sudden departure has triggered a swift succession process among the party's elected representatives in Cardiff Bay.

Although she is now viewed as the front-runner to take the leadership permanently, Jenner has not yet issued a formal public statement outlining her official candidacy or detailing her strategic vision for the post. Nevertheless, the field of potential rivals has rapidly narrowed in recent days as other prominent colleagues have distanced themselves from the contest.

Among those ruling themselves out is the party's chief whip in the Senedd, Llŷr Powell. Powell confirmed directly that he would not be putting his name forward for consideration, removing one of the key figures who might have otherwise contested the top position.

Another potential candidate, Reform's Welsh health spokesperson James Evans, also removed himself from contention. Evans claimed that he had secured majority backing among the party's group of Senedd members, but ultimately decided against launching a leadership bid after holding discussions regarding the matter with his family.

Should an alternative candidate emerge to challenge Jenner, party rules dictate that the final decision will be settled via a secret ballot conducted exclusively among Reform's sitting Members of the Senedd. The wider party grassroots membership will not be granted a vote in determining who will lead the Welsh parliamentary group.

Jenner brings a distinct background to the leadership role, having previously worked as a professional English teacher. Born in the south Wales industrial town of Neath, she spent her formative years growing up on the island of Anglesey, giving her connections to both northern and southern communities across Wales.

She is also a fluent Welsh speaker, though her political allegiances have occasionally drawn sharp hostility in cultural spheres. Speaking over the summer during an appearance on the BBC Walescast podcast, Jenner revealed that she had faced online backlash from critics who claimed she possessed no right to attend the National Eisteddfod because of her Reform party affiliation.

Jenner's active political journey began within the broader populist right movement several years before her election to the Senedd. She previously campaigned as an official parliamentary candidate for the Brexit Party during the 2019 UK general election, having earlier been an active member of UKIP during the era when Nigel Farage stood at its helm.

Reflecting on her political awakening during her podcast interview, Jenner credited Farage with directly sparking her passion for public life. She described how viewing footage of his fiery contributions in the European Parliament transformed her perspective on politics, noting that she had never previously witnessed a politician deliver speeches with such animation.

Those early impressions persuaded Jenner that Farage was a deeply principled political figure, which in turn prompted her to become deeply invested in frontline political affairs. Now, with senior support consolidated behind her, the former teacher stands on the verge of officially steering Reform's Welsh operation through its next political chapter.
