Java Sea Ferry Disaster: Survivor Recounts Escaping Overturned Vessel and Ten-Hour Ordeal

A survivor of a catastrophic maritime disaster in Indonesia has detailed the harrowing moments when a passenger ferry capsized within minutes in the Java Sea, leaving him and a small group of companions clinging to a floating gas canister for hours before rescue teams could reach them.

The disaster struck the Virgo Transport 8, a passenger vessel carrying an estimated 234 individuals during an inter-island crossing. As emergency operations continued into Tuesday, maritime authorities confirmed that at least six people had lost their lives, while 129 passengers and crew members remained unaccounted for amid treacherous weather conditions marked by turbulent seas and severe winds.

Rizky Apriansyah, an onboard waiter who had been employed on the vessel for only three months, recounted the abrupt start of the tragedy. He was asleep in quarters located on the ship's upper deck when his friends suddenly woke him at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, urging him to put on a life vest as the situation deteriorated rapidly.

Upon waking, Rizky realized the severity of the vessel's instability. The ship was already tilting heavily, leaning at an angle of roughly 30 degrees to its left side. The sheer angle made ordinary movement difficult and caused immediate panic among the crew members sharing the cabin.

Rizky and four of his companions quickly scrambled to escape their room and make their way onto the deck. Outside, the maritime environment was ferocious, with massive waves reaching heights between three and four meters repeatedly striking the side of the compromised hull, worsening the vessel's list with every impact.

The survivor noted a critical absence of general warning systems during the unfolding crisis. According to Rizky, no emergency alarms were sounded across the vessel, leading him to fear that many of the sleeping passengers below deck remained completely unaware of the imminent danger threatening the ship.

In the wake of the incident, the vessel's operator, Virgo Karya Shipping, addressed the alarm controversy through local news outlets, stating that management could not immediately comment on whether emergency protocols were executed because they needed to consult directly with the crew members who were on duty at the time.

The evacuation quickly turned chaotic as the ferry continued to roll onto its side. Rizky described losing his footing immediately upon crossing the doorway, falling directly against the ship's outer railing where he clung tightly to his friends before a massive wall of water swept all of them over the side and into the sea.

Once separated from the ship, the small group found themselves adrift in the dark, approximately 15 meters away from the sinking vessel. Desperate to stay afloat in the heavy swell, the group managed to locate and hold onto a buoyant 12-kilogram cooking gas cylinder that had been washed overboard.

From their precarious position in the water, the survivors watched in disbelief as the entire ferry was quickly overcome by the sea. Rizky noted that the ship rolled over and overturned completely in a matter of minutes, estimating the entire capsizing process took less than ten minutes from when the crisis began.

The group endured a grueling ordeal in the open ocean, floating together in rough waters for approximately ten hours. Their survival finally came to an end when the crew of a passing vessel spotted them in the water and pulled them to safety.

The Virgo Transport 8 had been undertaking a standard 510-kilometer commercial voyage from Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city situated in East Java, to the port of Banjarmasin on the island of Borneo. The full inter-island route normally requires roughly 20 hours of continuous navigation.

The ship had originally departed the port terminal in Surabaya on Saturday afternoon, but maritime authorities lost contact with the vessel, officially reporting it missing on Sunday morning. Search and rescue personnel eventually located the overturned, inverted hull resting roughly 80 nautical miles, or nearly 150 kilometers, outside the entrance to Banjarmasin port.

For Rizky, the physical and emotional scars of the sinking remain profound. Bearing visible surface wounds across his body and displaying bloodshot eyes from the hours spent in the seawater, he described feeling entirely overwhelmed, exhausted, and suffocated during the ordeal, ultimately resolving that he will never return to working at sea.

Meanwhile, emergency search and rescue teams from Indonesia's national search agency, BASARNAS, have continued to scour the Java Sea for the remaining 129 missing passengers. Rescue personnel face persistent obstacles as adverse oceanic conditions and gusting winds continue to complicate search efforts across the vast search zone.
