Justice Department Inquiry into Trump Investigators Thrown into Disarray by Lead Prosecutor's Resignation

A high-profile Justice Department investigation into former federal officials who led inquiries into President Donald Trump has fallen into disarray following the sudden departure of its chief prosecutor. Joe diGenova, a veteran Washington attorney appointed to direct the South Florida-based inquiry, tendered his resignation after an acrimonious discussion with Attorney General Todd Blanche, bringing renewed uncertainty to an effort viewed as an administration priority.

Sources familiar with the circumstances confirmed that diGenova's decision to step down came one day after a tense Wednesday telephone conference with Blanche. At the center of their confrontation was diGenova’s refusal to accept attorneys dispatched from Justice Department headquarters to assist the probe, alongside broader friction regarding the pace at which the sprawling case was moving forward.

Operational disputes had steadily accumulated between diGenova and department leadership in Washington over the logistics of his Florida outpost. Among the most prominent flashpoints was diGenova’s formal request for a dedicated Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, commonly referred to as a SCIF, to be constructed inside the Fort Pierce workspace. The prosecutor maintained that the specialized installation was vital to securely store and review highly classified records.

Rather than funding a new high-security buildout at the Fort Pierce location, Justice Department administrators instructed the prosecution team to commute to an FBI facility situated several miles away. While the local office contained a secure room certified to hold sensitive government records, it lacked the clearance level required to handle material carrying the highest national security classifications.

Staffing allocations served as another recurring grievance during diGenova’s tenure as special counsel. The veteran attorney repeatedly pressed headquarters for additional prosecutors to bolster his team. However, senior Justice Department officials pushed back against those characterizations, denying that the South Florida operation was deprived of adequate institutional support or personnel.

The federal investigation originally emerged more than a year ago with a relatively concentrated mandate to pursue criminal charges against former CIA Director John Brennan. Brennan, who has frequently been a target of the president’s public criticism, faced allegations from the administration regarding false statements made during past testimony before Congress.

That initial phase of the probe ran into deep skepticism from career Justice Department prosecutors assigned to the case. After assembling an internal legal analysis, the career team warned that the available evidence was insufficient to sustain a viable criminal prosecution. The internal resistance prompted top Justice Department leadership to intervene in April, removing lead career prosecutor Maria Medetis Long from her post.

Following Long's removal, the department installed diGenova, who quickly set about vastly expanding the scale and ambition of the inquiry. Rather than limiting the focus exclusively to Brennan's congressional remarks, diGenova sought to build a wide-ranging conspiracy case scrutinizing prominent political adversaries and law enforcement figures who played roles in various investigations of Trump over the past decade.

In diGenova’s broader vision, the investigation encompassed potential criminal misconduct spanning nearly ten years of government oversight. The inquiry sought to re-evaluate the origins of the 2016 counterintelligence investigation into Russian election interference, extending through the federal cases concerning the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, and the subsequent investigation into classified documents retained at Mar-a-Lago.

The prosecutor's exit unfolded on an active day for the inquiry, coming on a Thursday just as investigative personnel were presenting a witness before a federal grand jury. The sudden loss of leadership threatens to cause further delays in a probe that has repeatedly missed internal milestones throughout the year.

Department leadership in Washington had initially anticipated that charging decisions might materialize much earlier in the year. More recently, officials held expectations that the first wave of indictments could potentially be filed as early as this month. With diGenova’s exit, the immediate timeline remains clouded, though law enforcement authorities insist the remaining staff is capable of advancing the probe.

Officials at the Justice Department maintain confidence in the existing team and anticipate that the overall momentum of the inquiry will accelerate in diGenova’s absence. By resolving procedural friction and disagreements over personnel, leadership expects the unit to proceed without administrative bottlenecks.

For his part, diGenova defended his methodical approach, stating that it was a privilege to serve the president and the Justice Department. Drawing on his half-century of prosecutorial experience, he maintained that constructing complex cases requires careful work with witnesses and evidence, emphasizing that thorough investigations take considerable time.

Despite the internal discord, investigative steps had noticeably intensified in the weeks preceding diGenova’s resignation, marked by a series of subpoenas demanding documentation and grand jury appearances. Recent inquiries have reached former mid- and senior-level government staff who possessed direct insight into the FBI’s 2016 Russia inquiry, including individuals who worked closely with former FBI Director James Comey.
