Rep. Ilhan Omar Declines to Address Police Search of Residence Shared by Her Son and Felon Roommate

Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota remained silent when questioned by reporters on Capitol Hill regarding a recent law enforcement search executed at a Minneapolis residence shared by her adult son and a roommate with a felony record. The search, which uncovered multiple firearms and rounds of ammunition, has brought public attention to the living arrangements of the lawmaker’s son, despite neither he nor the congresswoman being accused of any criminal wrongdoing.

The search warrant was carried out on August 25 by Minneapolis police officers at a property jointly occupied by Omar’s 20-year-old son, Adnan Hirsi, and his 22-year-old roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi. During the operation, investigators recovered several weapons along with accompanying ammunition from the shared living quarters, prompting inquiries into the circumstances that led law enforcement to the address.

According to reporting on the matter, the police action originated from an earlier routine traffic stop involving Abdi. When officers pulled Abdi over, they determined that he was operating the vehicle without a valid driver's license and lacked necessary proof of vehicular insurance. Consequently, authorities released Abdi at the scene and impounded the car.

A subsequent inspection of the impounded vehicle led to the recovery of a firearm. Under state and federal statutes, individuals convicted of felony offenses are strictly prohibited from possessing firearms. Because Abdi was legally barred from owning or possessing weapons, law enforcement officials secured a judicial search warrant to inspect the residence he shared with Hirsi in search of additional prohibited items.

Law enforcement records and official statements make clear that Hirsi faces no allegations of misconduct, and no criminal charges have been filed against him in connection with the discovery. Similarly, Representative Omar has not been accused of any unlawful activity. Nevertheless, the presence of multiple weapons inside the young man's residence and his cohabitation with a prohibited individual have attracted scrutiny.

The roommate, Abdi, is now facing weapons-related charges following the search and seizure. Records show that Abdi was released from custody the day after his arrest. He possesses an extensive criminal record that includes ten prior arrests, as well as a 2024 felony conviction for driving over 100 miles per hour.

As the developments became public, reporters approached Representative Omar in the corridors of the Capitol to seek her perspective on the law enforcement action and her son's living situation. The congresswoman gave no verbal response and continued to walk through the congressional hallways as questions were directed to her.

Journalists pressed the Minnesota Democrat on what information she had received regarding the raid and why the search had occurred in the first place. Additional questions focused on whether she intended to advise her 20-year-old son to vacate the premises or distance himself from the co-tenant, but Omar proceeded in silence without acknowledging the inquiries.

Requests for formal comment submitted to Omar’s congressional office were not immediately answered following the hallway encounter. The silence from her office leaves open questions about whether the congresswoman intends to make a formal statement regarding the incident involving her son's residence.

Representative Omar, who represents Minnesota’s heavily Democratic 5th Congressional District and is currently pursuing another term in office, holds a prominent profile in national politics. She made history as a Somali refugee and as the first hijab-wearing woman elected to the United States Congress, often serving as a focal point in high-profile policy debates.

The discovery of firearms in her son's shared home stands in contrast to Omar’s outspoken public advocacy on gun safety legislation. Throughout her tenure in Congress, the lawmaker has consistently championed stringent gun control measures, including calls to close the gun show loophole and enact comprehensive "red flag" legislation that temporarily prevents individuals deemed dangerous to public safety from possessing weapons.

The recent incident is not the first time Omar’s son has been mentioned in public discussions concerning law enforcement. Omar previously disclosed that her U.S.-born son was stopped by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota during an encounter on December 13, an event that she highlighted in discussions surrounding immigration enforcement practices.

The intersection of family associations and high-profile political careers often draws intense media examination, particularly for prominent figures in contentious legislative environments. While Hirsi has maintained a private profile apart from his mother’s political apparatus, the police action at his residence has nonetheless fueled political commentary.

For now, legal proceedings remain focused strictly on Abdi as he faces formal weapons charges tied to the August 25 raid. With Omar and her office opting not to release a public statement on the matter, the focus remains on the ongoing judicial process surrounding her son's roommate.
