Tributes Paid to Welsh Business Leader Owain Davies Following Fatal Swiss Alps Air Crash

Tributes have been paid to prominent Welsh businessman Owain Davies after he was confirmed as one of three people who died in a light aircraft crash in the Swiss Alps. The 55-year-old, who hailed from west Wales, was the managing director of the Carmarthenshire-based engineering company Amcanu.

The fatal incident occurred when a Cirrus SR22T light aircraft came down on a mountain slope in the southern Swiss canton of Valais. According to authorities, the aircraft had taken off from Sion airport located in the Rhône Valley, but approximately 10 minutes into the flight, it crashed near the mountain town of Leukerbad for reasons that remain unknown.

Eyewitnesses in the Alpine area reported observing smoke and flames rising from the crash site high on the mountainside. The report triggered an immediate and extensive emergency response, bringing together specialized personnel from the Valais Rescue Organisation, regional police officers, and local firefighting teams, backed by three rescue helicopters dispatched to the rugged terrain.

Officials confirmed that three people lost their lives in the disaster. While Davies has been formally named, Swiss authorities are currently carrying out the formal identification process for the other two victims, one of whom has also been confirmed as a British national whose identity has not yet been publicly released.

Following the announcement of his death, Davies’s son, Aron Davies, released a moving statement expressing the immense grief felt by the family. He stated that his family had suffered an unimaginable loss, remembering his father as a driven and determined individual who approached challenges with an unwavering resolve and simply did not accept that any problem was too large to be overcome.

Aron also reflected on his father’s enduring guidance, describing him as a vibrant character and expressing immense pride in everything he had achieved throughout his career and personal life. He noted that his father had served as a lifelong mentor to him both personally and professionally, adding that many colleagues at the engineering firm would feel the profound loss of a mentor as well.

In an official statement, the Burry Port engineering firm Amcanu shared its profound sadness over the loss of its managing director. The business paid tribute to Davies’s character, describing him as a leader who was strong-willed, spirited, determined, and deeply caring toward those around him.

The company underscored that family remained the ultimate priority and centerpiece of Davies’s life throughout his career. The firm highlighted his devotion to his wife Michelle, his deep pride in his two children, Aron and Ffion, and the immense joy he found in being a grandfather to his two young grandsons, Oakley and Albie.

Amcanu has deep historical roots in the west Wales industrial community, having been established in Burry Port in 1975 by Davies’s father, Spencer Davies OBE. Owain Davies took over the leadership and executive management of the family engineering business in 2000, steering the enterprise for more than two decades.

Beyond his commercial leadership, Davies was celebrated by his company as a proud Welshman and a fluent Welsh speaker who remained closely connected to his local community. His dedication to public service in west Wales spanned decades, marked by hands-on involvement in regional safety and emergency operations.

Earlier in his life, Davies dedicated nearly a quarter of a century to maritime safety, serving for almost 25 years as a helmsman with the Burry Port Lifeboat crew. His long-standing service with the lifeboat station reflected a deep commitment to voluntary emergency response and community service.

In 2017, Davies expanded his charitable efforts by joining the board of the Wales Air Ambulance Charity as a trustee. In this governance role, he helped support the vital emergency medical aviation services provided across Wales, combining his leadership experience with his passion for lifesaving operations.

Dr Kyle Jacques, the chair of trustees at the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, praised Davies for making a significant contribution to the organization and its essential operations. He described Davies as a highly valued colleague and friend whose loyalty and generosity of spirit had left a lasting mark on the charity, noting that he would be greatly missed by everyone who worked alongside him.

In Switzerland, aviation authorities and law enforcement have initiated comprehensive inquiries to determine what led to the fatal crash. The Swiss Transportation Safety Board has opened a formal investigation into the circumstances of the flight, while the Valais Police and the Office of the Attorney General have also launched an official inquiry into the incident.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed that British diplomatic officials are actively liaising with local authorities in Switzerland and offering consular assistance. A spokesperson confirmed that the department is providing continuous support to the families of the two British nationals who lost their lives, offering condolences during this difficult time.
