President Donald Trump has officially sent a new roster of diplomatic nominations to the United States Senate, selecting Kimberly Greenwood, the wife of country music artist Lee Greenwood, to serve as the chief American diplomat to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. The selection highlights the continued presidential custom of choosing prominent personal allies and loyal supporters for coveted diplomatic missions across the globe.
Under the terms of the nomination, Kimberly Greenwood would assume a regional diplomatic portfolio based in Barbados. Her appointment stipulates that she will concurrently represent American interests across several neighboring island nations without receiving extra compensation, managing relations with Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines once confirmed by the Senate.
Following the White House announcement, Kimberly Greenwood shared a photograph on Instagram featuring herself alongside her husband and the president, expressing her gratitude for the diplomatic appointment. She publicly thanked Trump for placing his confidence in her leadership and granting her the opportunity to represent the nation in the Caribbean post.
The nomination reinforces the deep personal and professional ties between the president and the Greenwood family. Lee Greenwood composed and performed the patriotic anthem "God Bless the USA," a song that has served as Trump’s signature musical introduction at political rallies and campaign events for years. Beyond political appearances, the two men have previously collaborated on commercial ventures, including the promotion and sale of the "God Bless the USA Bible" priced at $59.99.
Lee Greenwood publicly celebrated his wife’s nomination on social media, noting her extensive prior professional relationship with the president. He highlighted that she had worked with Trump over an 18-year period while he owned the Miss Universe Organization, during which time she managed and directed state-level pageants.
Awarding ambassadorships to key allies and political backers is a longstanding tradition observed by administrations from both major political parties. Coveted diplomatic postings, particularly in island nations and European capitals, have routinely been granted to major contributors and close associates rather than career foreign service officers.
The Eastern Caribbean mission has previously served as a destination for political appointees under prior leadership. Democratic President Joe Biden chose Roger Nyhus, a prominent donor and business leader from Seattle, to oversee the exact same diplomatic post covering Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean nations.
Alongside the Caribbean posting, Trump announced the nomination of outgoing Texas Republican Representative Wesley Hunt to become the top U.S. envoy to Saudi Arabia. Hunt is currently concluding his second congressional term representing a district in the greater Houston area.
Hunt’s shift toward a diplomatic role follows his recent bid for statewide office, having placed third in the March 2026 Texas Republican primary for the U.S. Senate behind Ken Paxton and John Cornyn.
If confirmed by the Senate, Hunt will bring prior military and regional experience to the post in Riyadh. Before entering electoral politics, he served as a U.S. Army officer and worked as a diplomatic liaison within Saudi Arabia. Hunt responded to the nomination on the social media platform X, stating that he recognizes the profound strategic value of the U.S.-Saudi relationship and the significant responsibilities tied to the diplomatic mission.
The Riyadh post carries high strategic stakes amid severe regional instability. Hunt would take over the diplomatic mission as the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran continues without an apparent resolution, and as hostilities between Saudi forces and Iran-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen grow increasingly intense.
The package of personnel moves submitted by the White House on Monday also included nominees to fill long-standing diplomatic vacancies in several other nations, including Haiti, Somalia, Djibouti, and Suriname.
While most political appointees assigned to ambassadorial positions have limited influence over core foreign policy decisions, past appointments from outside the professional diplomatic corps have occasionally generated controversy for the White House.
During Trump's first administration, hotel executive Gordon Sondland was appointed ambassador to the European Union after contributing $1 million to the inaugural committee. Sondland later delivered damaging public testimony during Trump’s first impeachment inquiry regarding efforts to pressure Ukrainian officials to investigate Biden, leading to his eventual removal from the administration.
Other first-term political appointees also generated international scrutiny. Jeffrey Ross Gunter, a donor selected as ambassador to Iceland, unsettled local officials in the low-crime capital of Reykjavik by requesting armed bodyguards. In the United Kingdom, Ambassador Robert "Woody" Johnson faced criticism over claims he attempted to steer the British Open golf tournament to a Trump-owned property in Scotland, alongside accusations involving inappropriate sexist and racist comments.
