Violent Chants Target Prominent Democrats During Ted Cruz Speech at GOP Midterm Convention

Audible shouts urging gun violence against Democratic political candidates echoed across the convention floor Thursday night as United States Senator Ted Cruz addressed the crowd at the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas, Texas. The disturbing outbursts occurred during the second day of the gathering, hosted at the American Airlines Center, casting a shadow over an evening that was otherwise intended to rally the conservative base ahead of upcoming midterm elections.

The alarming chants were clearly picked up by television broadcasts as the Texas senator launched a series of sharp verbal attacks targeting high-profile progressive candidates and officeholders across the country. As Cruz systematically named three specific political opponents, members of the audience could be heard shouting "He should be shot!" after each individual politician was mentioned from the podium.

The three Democrats singled out during Cruz's remarks were New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, and Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico. The direct, repeated cries of physical violence followed the mention of each political figure in succession, puncturing Cruz's address as he portrayed the trio as radical threats to American institutions.

The aggressive rhetoric from attendees came on a day already laden with solemn reflections on the consequences of political extremism. Convention speakers and party leaders had dedicated portions of the program to denouncing political violence, as Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Vice President JD Vance, an ally and close friend of Kirk, delivered a featured address reflecting on the activist's death.

Following the broadcast, El-Sayed responded directly to the violent outbursts during an appearance on CNN's "The Source with Kaitlan Collins." The Michigan Senate contender emphasized the personal toll and dangerous implications of having calls for assassination injected into mainstream campaign rhetoric, noting that such extreme sentiment threatens the safety of candidates and their families.

El-Sayed, speaking candidly to Collins, noted that he is a father of two young daughters and expressed his fundamental hope that his children will have the opportunity to grow up with their father present in their lives. He warned that explicit incitement has increasingly become normalized in contemporary American political discourse, insisting that anyone who heard the convention shouts carries a civic responsibility to condemn them without reservation.

During his speech, Cruz had argued that voters must take the previous statements and ideological stances of progressive politicians at face value. The Texas senator told the arena audience that individuals reveal their true nature through their public declarations, urging conservatives to believe Democratic figures when they express far-left economic and social viewpoints.

Focusing on Mamdani, Cruz declared that when the New York City mayor speaks of seizing the means of production, the democratic socialist genuinely intends to pursue that goal. Mamdani had previously discussed the concept of seizing the means of production during a 2021 speech regarding his political philosophy; however, during his 2025 mayoral campaign, representatives clarified that such an objective was not part of his governing platform.

Cruz directed his next criticism toward El-Sayed, claiming the Michigan nominee was committed to following Sharia law. That critique referenced a 2009 New York Times interview in which El-Sayed, who was then a medical student, discussed feeling an obligation to adhere to Islamic principles by avoiding interest payments when seeking financing to purchase his first home.

The Texas senator also targeted his in-state opponent, Talarico, citing a recent news report regarding statements the candidate made in 2020 about dismantling capitalism alongside white supremacy and climate change. In response to those reports, Talarico's campaign explicitly pushed back against the characterization, maintaining that the Texas Democrat remains a proud capitalist committed to standard economic growth.

The convention proceedings had opened earlier in the day with formal tributes to Kirk, the co-founder of Turning Point USA who was shot and killed at age 31 on a college campus in Utah. Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters inaugurated the session by praising Kirk's belief in the nation and commending his dedication to encouraging younger generations to champion conservative values.

Later in the program, Cruz linked Kirk's murder to broader historical events and threats against public figures, speaking just one day before the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. In his speech, Cruz connected the hatred behind the September 11 attacks, the fatal shooting of Kirk, and the two separate assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump, asserting that extremist animosity in American public life continues to intensify.

The broadcasts quickly prompted sharp condemnation from national Democratic lawmakers, who demanded accountability from Republican leadership. House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts took to social media to urge every Republican official to repudiate the chants heard on the floor, while Michigan Representative Debbie Dingell denounced the outbursts as an exhibition of unvarnished hatred.

Representatives for Senator Cruz and officials from the Republican National Committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the convention floor remarks. It remained unclear whether Cruz was able to hear the audience members calling for gun violence from his position at the stage lectern while delivering his speech.
